Super Saturday at Wimbledon - Almost
Super Saturday is normally what we see at the US Open. This is the day that the men’s semis and the women’s final are played on Centre Court.
Today at Wimbledon we witness the men’s semis and the women’s final. The only difference is that one of the men’s matches is being played on court 1.
The number 1 seed, Roger Federer takes on Frenchman Richard Gasquet. As I write this post Federer has just taken a two set lead. The four time defending champion took the first set 7-5 and followed this up 6-3. Unless Gasquet can pull something out of his hat it looks as though Federer will have a shot at matching the great Bjorn Borg’s 5 consecutive Wimbledon titles.
Meanwhile in the other semi the young Serbian Novak Djokovic got off to a good start against world number 2 Rafael Nadal taking the first set 6-3. Nadal showed he was not giving up easily and hit back taking the second set 6-1. Djokovic must surely be feeling the effects of two marathon matches in the previous rounds.
It is looking likely that there will be a repeat of the Wimbledon tennis final from last year. Last year Federer was too good for Nadal winning the match 6-0 7-6(5) 7-6(2) 6-3.
At the conclusion of the Federer-Gasquet match on centre court we will see the Women’s final between former 3 time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams and surprise finalist Marion Bartoli.
