Adidas tennis would have been estatic about the results of the Australian Open tennis. Three of the four finalists were sponsored by the German sporting giant. You’ve got to be happy about that if you are a tennis clothing sponsor. It would have been really great if Ana Ivanovic managed to win her first […]

Australia bounced from Davis Cup World Group

Monday, September 24th, 2007

For just the second time since the introduction of the World Group in 1981 Australia has been relegated to the zone group. This came following a 4-1 loss in the World Group playoff against Serbia in Belgrade.

Serbia featuring world number 3 Novak Djokovic were too strong for the Australian team headlined by former world number 1 Lleyton Hewitt. Going into the last day Serbia held a 2-1 lead. The Aussie team threw Chris Guccione in against Novak Djokovic in the vital fourth rubber. Lleyton Hewitt was due to play however he succumbed to the effects of a viral infection.

Guccione made Djokovic work hard for the victory. When Djokovic heard he was to play Guccione instead of Hewitt he said he felt some relief however the big Aussie probably played as tough as Hewitt would have. The final score was 6-3, 7-6, 7-6. Australian Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald said he thought Djokovic was looking a bit tired during the match and it could have been a different story had Guccione won one of the tie breaks.

Next year Serbia can look forward to a World Group berth while Australia will need to fight hard to rejoin the elite World Group competition.

  • Federer win sets up US Open final against Djokovic

    Saturday, September 8th, 2007

A win for Roger Federer over Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko has setup a final show down against Novak Djokovic. The final score was 7-5, 6-1, 7-5.

The match lasted 2hr 21 minutes. Despite not playing his best tennis Federer got through this match without dropping a set. Davydenko had several chances in the third set to take the match to the fourth set. With Federer serving at 4-5 30-40 Davendenko missed by a matter of inches grabbing the set. He had played a patient point and had the opening down the line. Federer was beaten however the shot was just wide. After this Federer stepped up a gear to close out the match.

In the other US Open tennis men’s semi final Novak Djokovic overcame the heat and a tough opponent in the form of Spain’s David Ferrer. After going down 1-4 in the first set Djokovic stormed back to take the first set 6-4.

Twice in the match Djokovic had to call for the trainer. He appeared to be suffering from the heat. With the final the next day hopefully he is fresh enough to challenge Federer. In today’s match he fought doggedly to overcome his opponent and took the second set 6-4. He then closed out the match 6-3 to reach his first grand slam final.

Federer will be looking to turn around the last result he had against Djokovic. Just a couple of weeks ago Djokovic defeated Federer in the final of the Montreal Master’s series final. In that tournament the young Serbian player defeated Roddick, Nadal and Federer in consecutive matches.

Djokovic will be lining up against Federer who will be playing in his 10th consecutive grand slam final. The final is the second time the two players have met in a grand slam. Earlier this year Federer defeated Djokovic in straight sets at the Australian Open. On that occasion it was a round of 16 matchup.

If Federer can win the US Open final he will claim his fourth consecutive crown and grand slam tournament win number 12.
